Title: Netflix UX Eye-Tracking Research Use Case
Objective:
To examine how subtitles influence the viewing experience across different language proficiency levels and how usage varies based on video content.
Target Users:
Streaming platforms looking to optimize subtitle design for better viewer engagement, content creators aiming to understand subtitle impact on storytelling, and UX designers creating user-friendly and accessible subtitle interfaces for diverse audiences (including those with impairments).
Key Outcomes:
The research revealed that lower German language proficiency users relied heavily on subtitles, while higher-proficiency users used them for occasional clarification or due to reflex. Subtitles proved more engaging during dialogues than action scenes and served as a secondary clarification tool rather than a primary source of information.
My Role:
As a key member of the research team, I specialized in the methodological execution of the eye-tracking study, ensuring data integrity and optimal testing conditions.
I was responsible for:
✔ Setting up the test environment.
✔ Providing technical support to participants and team-mates before, during and after the test.
✔ Creating and refining test questions.
✔ Overseeing all aspects of the test sessions.
✔ Analyzing portions of the test results using Tobii Pro Software.
✔ Managing all aspects related to the Tobii Pro eye-tracking glasses, including setup for optimal test conditions.
